Veliki Preslav — The Second Bulgarian Capital

Preslav replaced Pliska as the Bulgarian capital in 893 AD and became a centre of literature and art during the Golden Age of Bulgarian culture. The archaeological museum here houses the famous Preslav Gold Treasure and beautiful ceramic icons. The fortress ruins are spread across a hillside with excellent views. Quieter than many tourist sites, it’s a rewarding visit for anyone interested in the region’s deep history.
