Shumen Fortress

Perched on a hill above the city of Shumen, this fortress has been in use for over 3,000 years — from Thracian times through the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. The restored walls and towers are impressive, and the views over the Shumen plateau are wonderful. Nearby you can also visit the Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria, a striking brutalist monument visible for miles, and the Tombul Mosque, the largest in the country.
